Jaundice

Jaundice

  • Jaundice is the yellow color seen in the skin of many newborns.
  • It happens when a chemical called bilirubin builds up in the baby's blood, it does not mean liver disease.
  • You can tell if your baby is jaundiced by looking at their skin in good lighting to see if it appears yellow.
  • Jaundice usually appears in the face first and then moves to the chest, abdomen and can sometimes be seen in the whites of eyes.
  • Jaundice can last for 2-3 weeks and may need to be treated with phototherapy.
  • If you have any questions, please talk to your nurse or baby's doctor.
