Crying
Babies cry for many reasons. To comfort your baby when crying, try one or more of the following ideas:
- Pick him/her up (Don't worry about picking them up too much, you will not spoil them)
- Check the diaper and change if soiled or wet
- See if he/she is too hot or too cold
- Burp him/her
- Feed him/her slowly
- Give him/her a pacifier
- Take him/her to a quiet room
- Hold him/her against your chest and walk or rock them
- Take him/her for a ride or put them in a baby swing
- Sing or talk softly to him/her
Many babies have a fussy time of day. Responding to your baby's cry teaches them that you care for him/her and want them to feel secure. If you are not able to comfort your baby, try other ideas listed in the section "YOU AND YOUR CHANGING FAMILY". You may also call your baby's doctor for help.
Remember, crying is the only way a new baby can tell you what his/her needs are. Be patient. Your baby will be talking soon.
