At Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, a new 29-bed Orthopedic Unit opened on the sixth floor of the Sparrow
Tower on February 5, 2008. The new unit has all private rooms and a dedicated orthopedic nursing, rehabilitation
and case management team. The unit was designed using input from Sparrow orthopedic staff members and is tailored
toward personal care, patient comfort and privacy.
The size and configuration of the patient rooms allows for maximal privacy, ease in mobility and inclusion
of family in the post-operative care and rehabilitation process. There is an on-unit orthopedic rehabilitation
gym as well as a conference room that will be used for patient education, including
pre-operative joint replacement classes.
The private rooms are designed to allow active participation of the patient in their plan of care, patients
and families will have control over the immediate environment, and support and involvement of family.
The Sparrow Inpatient Rehabilitation Program consists
of a 31-bed licensed JCAHO (Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) and
CARF (Commission for Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) accredited unit with a full range of medical and therapy services. The Inpatient
Rehabilitation Unit provides services for patients with physically disabling conditions, which from an orthopedic perspective, could be related to
arthritis, amputation, multiple fractures, and/or other musculoskeletal disorders.
