How to protect yourself from H1N1

Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people. A very effective way of avoiding the flu (and preventing the spread of it) is to practice some simple, common-sense good health habits. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure - by taking these steps, you will reduce your chances of becoming ill or spreading germs.

  • Wash your hands often with liquid soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and immediately dispose of the issue in a waste basket. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve if you don't have a tissue.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. Germs spread this way.
  • Limit or avoid contact with sick people. If you need to have close contact with someone who has the flu, you can wear a facemask (such as a surgical mask).
  • Stay home if you get sick. CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Get the seasonal flu shot to avoid becoming ill with the seasonal flu.
  • Get the H1N1 flu shot if you are at risk for complications from the flu. For more information about flu shots, please read part four of Sparrow's online flu kit, titled All About Vaccinations.
