Annual Salary
PGY 1 - $42,425
PGY 2 - $44,122
PGY 3 - $45,888
Meals: Each resident will receive meals while on duty at Sparrow Hospital that is
consistent with the resident meal allowance policy. Annually, the hospital
approves a total resident fund that is allocated to the residency programs.
Vacation/Leave:
Vacation – 2 weeks/year (PGY 1), 3 weeks/year (PGY 2/3).
Conference Time – 1 week/year (PGY 1/2/3).
Maternity Leave – available* (6 weeks routine, 8 weeks C/S
covered by Sparrow, additional time negotiable).
Sick Leave – 120 days/year.*
Paternity Leave – available.*
*This requires a blending of hospital, residency and American Board of
Family Medicine regulations. Each case is individually negotiated to ensure the resident understands what the different combinations of time away mean.
CME Stipend: $600/year (PGY 1), $1,000/year (PGY 2/3), $2,000/year (Chief Resident)
Insurance:
Health – Enrollment in Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan,
Physicians Health Plan (PHP) (an IPA HMO), Sparrow Physicians Health Network
(SPHN) (a PPO) will be provided for the resident and eligible dependents.
Dental – Dental coverage is provided for each resident and
eligible dependents through Midwestern Dental Plan of Michigan.
Disability – 60% of the resident’s salary is provided
following a 120-day wait.
Life – Term life insurance is provided in an amount equal to
the annual base salary, effective following 60 days of continuous service.
Child Care: Available adjacent to Sparrow Hospital.
Moving Expenses: $500 loans are available from the
Medical Education Department.
Medical “Lab-Coats”: Two standard embroidered coats per year, total cost covered.
Heptavax Vaccination: Provided free by Associate Health Service.
Research/Search Services: Scientific American, Grateful Med, MedLine, OVID and
PDR along with other Medical Library resources are provided free to residents through
Sparrow Hospital’s Library and the Family Medicine Residency Program.
Parking: Free parking provided in adjacent parking structure.
Moonlighting Opportunities: Available and
encouraged after permanent licensure is obtained. PGY 1 residents and J-1 visa
residents cannot moonlight. Director approval is required for all
moonlighting activities. Moonlighting activities must fall within duty hour requirements and not interfere with overall
learning process.
Licensure: Full reimbursement of Michigan Training and Controlled Substance License fees.
Call Quarters: When taking call in-house, comfortable and private call quarters are provided for all residents.
Other: Fully reimbursed recruitment activities; free photocopying and faxing; computers
devoted for resident use are available at each training site; fully reimbursed BCLS/ACLS certification for PGY 1/2 residents; free neonatal
resuscitation course; free advanced life support in obstetrics certification; fully reimbursed AAFP resident membership. Also
available: hand-held PDA provided to each incoming PGY 1, extensive selection of software programs, computer science electives, computerized
documentation of resident experiences.
