Hematology Services

Hematology Services

The Sparrow Regional Children's Center provides a full range of hematology services to infants, children and adolescents. Hematology services provides health care for problems of the blood and blood-forming tissues.

These services are provided in cooperation with the following physicians from Michigan State University (MSU), Department of Pediatrics and Human Development:

Common hematology problems include:

  • anemia (low hemoglobin or red blood cell count)
  • sickle cell anemia
  • bleeding disorders such as hemophilia
  • strokes
  • clotting problems
  • thalassemia
  • myelodysplastic syndrome
  • aplastic anemia
  • immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)
  • histiocytosis

The physicians at MSU along with the Sparrow Health System, participate in selected drug trials and national treatment protocols related to blood problems.
